3 Ways To Stop Feeling Overwhelmed By Marketing

Why is marketing so hard and why does it feel like an enormous task?

I think because when it comes to marketing, there are so many options and expectations. There isn't one clear list of things to do.

You can't be everything to everyone.

And you can't do all the marketing things all the time.

I've seen a heap of business owners who stop and start, who struggle to get into a routine or rhythm. Doing your marketing is like exercise, it works best if you stick with it regularly.

Today is about stopping the overwhelm.

Let's focus on these three things:

#1 What Is Marketing?

Marketing is:

1. An activity that promotes a business; or
2. An activity that promotes a product or service.

Right. It's vague isn't it. Maybe that's why it can feel like it's so huge.

What if I said to you that marketing is more like reminders.

Let me explain.

What if your marketing is just a reminder to people. And all you have to do is to remind people of who you are and what you do.

That's sounds easy. It's not salesy, it's just a reminder!

If you talked to one person this week and reminded them that you sell x, then technically that is marketing.

You can do that.

boom. simple.

#2 It's not a big deal.

What if I said to you that it doesn't matter if people buy from you or not?

Your only marketing thing to do is to remind people that you have a business ... (insert) and you are located...(insert) and you sell....(insert).

If you're not overwhelmed,  and you're feeling good, then keep reading, this is an easy thing to add on to your reminder...

You could make it really easy for them to buy from you. For instance, to buy product x, you can go to my website and buy online or you can call my office to pay for it over the phone

Loosen your grip on your expectations. If you re read the definition of marketing, you will realise it has nothing to do with sales. It doesn't once say anything about selling.

So don't expect your marketing to make sales, just keep reminding people what you do in your business. That's it.

If you do one thing this week that tells people about your business, then tick marketing off your list. Done.

#3 Commit To Do Your Marketing Regularly

Commit to doing marketing activity or activities regularly.

If we were to keep things simple, we would just do the same thing, week in, week out.

No one said you had to do a heap of marketing, just do one thing regularly.

James Clear, Atomic Habits Author, explains that just by writing out one sentence, an implementation intention, you will increase you chance of actually doing it. *

Motivation often comes after you start. Focus on the first 2mins of the activity, in this case, your marketing activity. Turn the world off, remove distractions and set yourself up to succeed.

Pop this on a post it note and put it on your drink bottle or computer screen or in some place where you will see it more than once a day.

Your implementation sentence looks something like this..

It has day, time and place.

On Monday's, I am going to do at least 1 hour of marketing at 9am.

Why don't your try to write your implementation intention. If you want some accountability, hit reply and show me your marketing intention!

In Conclusion

1. Don't lose focus on what marketing is, read the definition;
2. Don't expect any sales; and
3. Do your marketing regularly.

I hope that I have softened the feelings of overwhelming.

That's all from me today!

Thanks for reading, I hope that this has sparked something for you. Chat to you next week.
